Population

The Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 125,649 in 1970 to 230,713 in 2010. That was an increase of 83.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 505 in 1970 to 6,542 in 2010. That was an increase of 1195.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.4 percent to 2.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 79.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the principal factor adding population in the first two periods, but NDM had that role in the latest period.
