Population

The Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 591,791 in 1970 to 662,577 in 2010. That was an increase of 12.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 30,607 in 1970 to 35,434 in 2010. That was an increase of 15.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 5.2 percent to 5.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 11.8 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary source of added population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. International migration (NIM) replaced B-D as the main factor adding population in the most recent period.
