Providence-Warwick, RI-MA Metro Area Immigration

Population

The Providence-Warwick Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,391,046 in 1970 to 1,600,852 in 2010. That was an increase of 15.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 124,509 in 1970 to 194,342 in 2010. That was an increase of 56.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 9.0 percent to 12.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 11.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was constantly negative in all periods and (B-D) was the primary factor adding population in the first two periods, and NIM had that role in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, international migration (NIM) became the primary factor adding population in the first two periods and the sole factor in the most recent period.
