Population

The Missoula Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 58,263 in 1970 to 109,299 in 2010. That was an increase of 87.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,413 in 1970 to 2,565 in 2010. That was an increase of 81.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.4 percent to 2.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 87.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary factor in added population in the first two periods, replaced by B-D in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the factors of added population retained the same relationship.
