Population

The Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 1,403,688 in 1970 to 1,555,908 in 2010. That was an increase of 10.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 62,983 in 1970 to 100,384 in 2010. That was an increase of 59.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 4.5 percent to 6.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 8.6 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in all periods, and domestic migration was negative in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the prime factor in adding population in all periods, but nearly equalled by NIM.
