Population

The Huntsville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 228,239 in 1970 to 419,181 in 2010. That was an increase of 83.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,961 in 1970 to 22,387 in 2010. That was an increase of 656.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.3 percent to 5.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 76.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the principal factor adding population in the first period replaced by NDM in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same factors retained their roles in adding the most population.
