Population

The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/decreased from 4,431,390 in 1970 to 4,296,250 in 2010. That was a decrease of 3.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 301,954 in 1970 to 367,129 in 2010. That was an increase of 21.6 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.8 percent to 8.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 4.9 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was consistently negative. Natural change (B-D) was the principal factor in adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became the principal factor in population increase in the two most recent periods.
