Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metro Area Immigration

Population

The Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 1,116,226 in 1970 to 2,543,482 in 2010. That was an increase of 127.9 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 34,588 in 1970 to 308,049 in 2010. That was an increase of 790.6 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.1 percent to 12.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 106.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration was the principal factor adding population in the first and latest periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, international migration (NIM) became the primary factor adding population in the second period.
