Population

The Canton-Massillon Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 393,789 in 1970 to 404,422 in 2010. That was an increase of 2.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 10,173 in 1970 to 7,561 in 2010. That was a decrease of 25.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.6 percent to 1.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 3.5 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the first two periods replaced by NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became the largest contributor of population in the second period and the sole factor adding population in the most recent period.
