Population

The Worcester Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1 increased from 722,484 in 1970 to 916,980 in 2010. That was an increase of 26.9 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 55,602 in 1970 to 93,337 in 2010. That was an increase of 67.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 7.7 percent to 10.2 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 23.5 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. In it, natural change (B-D) was the chief factor adding population in the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the latest period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D was replaced by NIM as the chief source of added population in the second period.
