Population

The Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1 increased from 377,211 in 1970 to 640,595 in 2010. That was an increase of 69.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,681 in 1970 to 43,871 in 2010. That was an increase of 2509.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 58.9 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. In it, domestic migration (NDM) was the chief factor in adding population in the first two periods, replaced by B-D in the latest period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM emerged in the latest period as the primary source of added population.
