Population

The Visalia-Porterville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 188,322 in 1970 to 442,179 in 2010. That was an increase of 134.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 12,021 in 1970 to 104,379 in 2010. That was an increase of 768.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.4 percent to 23.6 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 91.6 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the primary factor in population increase in all periods.
