Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metro Area Immigration

Population

The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,105,553 in 1970 to 2,783,243 in 2010. That was an increase of 151.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 67,565 in 1970 to 354,733 in 2010. That was an increase of 425.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.1 percent to 12.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 134.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary factor in population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM remained the principal factor adding population in all periods.
