Population

The Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 182,973 in 1970 to 367,413 in 2010. That was an increase of 100.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,050 in 1970 to 21,294 in 2010. That was an increase of 938.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.1 percent to 5.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 91.3 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary source of added population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. B-D remained the main factor adding population in the first period, NDM held that position in the second period, and NIM contributed the most population in the latest period.
