Population

The Staunton-Waynesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 85,431 in 1970 to 119,000 in 2010. That was an increase of 39.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 212 in 1970 to 3,240 in 2010. That was an increase of 1428.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.2 percent to 2.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 36.8 percent.

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary source of added population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. NDM remained the primary factor in adding population in all periods.
