Population

The Spokane-Spokane Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 310,917 in 1970 to 527,602 in 2010. That was an increase of 69.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 9,819 in 1970 to 27,853 in 2010. That was an increase of 183.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.2 percent to 5.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 66.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the principal factor adding population in the first two periods, replaced by B-D in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the main factor adding population in the most recent period.
