Population

The Savannah Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 207,938 in 1970 to 347,611 in 2010. That was an increase of 67.2 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,191 in 1970 to 17,260 in 2010. That was an increase of 687.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.1 percent to 5.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 60.6 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in adding population in the first and latest two periods, and NDM held that position in the second period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM replaced NIM as the largest source of added population in the latest period in addition to the second period.
