Population

The Saginaw Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 219,743 in 1970 to 200,169 in 2010. That was a decrease of 8.9 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 5,481 in 1970 to 4,640 in 2010. That was a decrease of 15.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.5 percent to 2.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 8.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in adding population in all periods while the metro area was losing population overall.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the primary factor in adding population in the most recent period.
