Population

The Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 73,742 in 1970 to 96,317 in 2010. That was an increase of 30.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 177 in 1970 to 6,408 in 2010. That was an increase of 3255.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.3 percent to 6.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 22.5 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the main factor adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the source of the most added population in the two most recent periods.
