Population

The Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 210,011 in 1970 to 308,655 in 2010. That was an increase of 47.0 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 460 in 1970 to 15,801 in 2010. That was an increase of 3335.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.2 percent to 5.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 39.8 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the main factor adding population in the first two periods, replaced by NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. The relative position of the three factors in adding population was unchanged.
