Population

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,143,146 in 1970 to 4,224,851 in 2010. That was an increase of 269.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 68,344 in 1970 to 932,571 in 2010. That was an increase of 1264.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.4 percent to 22.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 206.3 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the first and most recent periods, and B-D was the primary factor in the second period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the primary source of population increase in the first and most recent period.
