Population

The Niles-Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 163,875 in 1970 to 156,866 in 2010. That was a decrease of 4.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 6,095 in 1970 to 8,851 in 2010. That was an increase of 45.2 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.7 percent to 5.6 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 6.2 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the primary source of added population in the two most recent periods.
