Population

The Napa Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 79,140 in 1970 to 136,484 in 2010. That was an increase of 72.5 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 4,097 in 1970 to 30,673 in 2010. That was an increase of 648.7 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 5.2 percent to 22.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 41.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. International migration (NIM) was the primary source of added population in the first two periods, replaced by NDM and NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM was the principal contributor of population in all periods. The negative natural change (B-D) indicates that the greater number of births than deaths in the first chart was due exclusively to the foreign-born population.
