Population

The Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 157,426 in 1970 to 172,188 in 2010. That was an increase of 9.4 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 3,830 in 1970 to 3,711 in 2010. That was a decrease of 3.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.4 percent to 2.2 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 9.7 percent.

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change B-D was the primary source of added population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the principal contributor of population in all periods.
