Population

The Merced Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 104,629 in 1970 to 255,793 in 2010. That was an increase of 144.5 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 7,388 in 1970 to 62,884 in 2010. That was an increase of 760.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 7.0 percent to 24.6 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 98.2 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) accounted for a majority of the population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the principal factor in population increase in all periods.
