Population

The Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 923,249 in 1970 to 1,332,576 in 2010. That was an increase of 44.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 6,232 in 1970 to 64,376 in 2010. That was an increase of 933.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.7 percent to 4.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 38.3 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) accounted for a majority of the population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D continued to be the principal factor in population increase in all periods.
