Population

The Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/increased from 197,487 in 1970 to 290,878 in 2010. That was an increase of 47.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,166 in 1970 to 15,282 in 2010. That was an increase of 605.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.1 percent to 5.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 23.4 percent.

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) accounted for a majority of the population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D continued to be the principal factor in population increase.
