Population

The Lawrence Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 57,932 in 1970 to 110,826 in 2010. That was an increase of 91.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 11,360 in 1970 to 434,379 in 2010. That was an increase of 3723.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.5 percent to 6.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 84.2 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. The primary source of added population shifted from NDM in the first period to B-D in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same pattern of added population held for the first two periods, but NIM became the largest source in the most recent period.
