Population

The Kennewick-Pasco-Richland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 93,356 in 1970 to 253,340 in 2010. That was an increase of 171.4 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,433 in 1970 to 34,847 in 2010. That was an increase of 2331.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.5 percent to 13.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 137.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. In it, natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in population increase in the earliest and most recent periods with NDM in that role in the second period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became the prime population contributor in the earliest period, and NDM was in that position in the two most recent periods.
