Population

The Johnstown Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 186,785 in 1970 to 143,679 in 2010. That was a decrease of 23.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 6,045 in 1970 to 2,099 in 2010. That was a decrease of 65.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.2 percent to 1.5 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 21.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. As both NIM and NDM were negative for all periods, NIM was the only source of additions to the population.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM remained the sole factor adding population, albeit at a low level.
