Population

The Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,034,993 in 1970 to 1,212,381 in 2010. That was an increase of 17.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 94,323 in 1970 to 154,698 in 2010. That was an increase of 64.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 9.1 percent to 12.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 12.4 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. The primary factor in adding population changed from B-D in the first two periods to NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the main factor in adding population in the second period and became the sole factor adding population in the most recent period.
