Population

The Harrisonburg Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 62,485 in 1970 to 125,327 in 2010. That was an increase of 100.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 154 in 1970 to 9,551 in 2010. That was an increase of 6101.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.2 percent to 7.6 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 85.7 percent.

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the primary factor adding population in the two most recent periods, replacing NDM in the first period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM replaced B-D as the main factor in adding population in the most recent period.
