Population

The Hammond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 65,875 in 1970 to 121,425 in 2010. That was an increase of 84.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 531 in 1970 to 2,267 in 2010. That was an increase of 326.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.8 percent to 1.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 82.4 percent from 1970 to 2010.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NEM) accounted for the most added population in the first two periods, replaced by B-D in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same pattern continued to apply.
