Population

The Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 413,053 in 1970 to 930,450 in 2010. That was an increase of 125.3 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 28,595 in 1970 to 286,085 in 2010. That was an increase of 900.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.9 percent to 30.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 67.6 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the major factor adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the major contributor of added population switched to NIM.
