Population

The Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 263,654 in 1970 to 280,566 in 2010. That was an increase of 6.4 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 8,456 in 1970 to 11,016 in 2010. That was an increase of 30.3 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.2 percent to 3.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 5.6 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the major factor adding population in all period, Although nearly equalled by NIM in the most recent period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the primary factor adding population in the first period, while NIM was the primary source of added population in the two most recent periods.
