The Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 101,537 in 1970 to 88,830 in 2010. That was a decrease of 12.5 percent.
The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 2,224 in 1970 to 2,192 in 2010. That was a decrease of 1.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.2 percent to 2.5 percent.
The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 12.8 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the major factor adding population in all periods.
The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the primary factor adding population in the first two periods, and NIM had that position in the most recent period.
