Population

The Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 245,856 in 1970 to 504,357 in 2010. That was an increase of 105.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 2,935 in 1970 to 62,663 in 2010. That was an increase of 2035.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.2 percent to 12.4 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 81.8 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the principal factor adding population in the first and most recent periods with B-D in that role in the second period.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM became the primary factor adding population in the two most recent periods.
