Population

The Duluth Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 293,422 in 1970 to 279,771 in 2010. That was a decrease of 4.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 13,965 in 1970 to 5,087 in 2010. That was a decrease of 63.6 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 4.8 percent to 1.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 1.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Immigration (NIM) was the sole factor adding net population in the first period and the primary factor in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the relative order of the factors was unchanged. [N.B. the annual average population change was negative for the first period and rose only slightly in the two most recent periods.]
