Chico, CA Metro Area Immigration

Population

The Chico Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 101,969 in 1970 to 220,000 in 2010. That was an inecrease of 115.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 3,424 in 1970 to 17,296 in 2010. That was an increase of 405.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.4 percent to 7.9 percet.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 105.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the primary source of population increase in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM continued to be the primary factor in population increase.
