Population

The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 1,061,901 in 1970 to 2,264,011 in 2010. That was an increase of 113.2 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 51867 in 1970 to 188,857 in 2010. That was an increase of 3542.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.5 percent to 8.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 24.7 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) was the largest factor accounting for population growth in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM remained the principal contributor to population increase in all periods.
