The Carbondale-Marion Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 104,029 in 1970 to 126,233 in 2010. That was an increase of 21.3 percent.
The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 972 in 1970 to 3,753 in 2010. That was an increase of 286.1 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.9 percent to 3.0 percent.
The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 18.8 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (NIM) was the primary source of added population in the first period, and NIM contributed a slight majority of added population in the two most recent periods.
The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM was again the primary factor adding population in the two most recent periods.
