Population

The Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 1,349,211 in 1970 to 1,135,509 in 2010. That was a decrease of 15.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 86,837 in 1970 to 67,319 in 2010. That was a decrease of 22.5 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.4 percent to 5.9 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 15.4 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. NDM was consistently negative although decreasing. B-D added the most to population in the first period, and NIM in the last two periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, net immigration (NIM) was the only factor offsetting population loss in the last period.
