Population

The Beckley Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 119,412 in 1970 to 124,986 in 2010. That was an increase of 4.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,045 in 1970 to 1,386 in 2010. That was an increase of 32.6 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.9 percent to 1.1 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 4.4 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was negative for all periods, NDM was the principal source of added population in the first period, and NIM was the sole source of added population in the two most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the relationship to population change of the three factors remained unchanged.
