Population

The Anchorage, AK Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 131,051 in 1970 to 380,821 in 2010. That was an increase of 190.6 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 1,676 in 1970 to 30,317 in 2010. That was an increase of 1708.9 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.3 percent to 8.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 170.9 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) accounted for the largest share of population increase in all three periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the main source of population increase in all periods.
