Population

The Altoona, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ decreased from 135,356 in 1970 to 127,076 in 2010. That was a decrease of 6.1 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 2,254 in 1970 to 1,262 in 2010. That was a decrease of 44.0 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 1.7 percent to 1.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) decreased by 5.5 percent.

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Population was dropping, and only NIM was adding population in the second period and the most recent periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, the same pattern continued except NIM was adding population in all periods.
