Population

The Alexandria, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 131,749 in 1970 to 153,922 in 2010. That was an increase of 16.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 933 in 1970 to 3,478 in 2010. That was an increase of 272.8 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 0.7 percent to 2.3 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 15.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the largest factor in population growth in all periods (although in the first period the overall population declined).

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the principal factor in population increase.
